Accessibility Statement for Kaya's Kitchen

Kaya's Kitchen is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for everyone. We are continually improving the user experience for all visitors and applying the relevant accessibility standards to ensure we provide equal access to all users.

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines outline four main principles that state that content should be:

  • Perceivable: Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
  • Operable: User interface components and navigation must be operable.
  • Understandable: Information and the operation of the user interface must be understandable.
  • Robust: Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.

We understand that achieving full accessibility is an ongoing process. Below are some of the measures we have taken to make Kaya's Kitchen more accessible:

Implemented Accessibility Features

  • Semantic HTML: We use semantic HTML5 elements to structure our content, making it easier for assistive technologies to understand the layout and meaning of our web pages.
  • Alternative Text: All images have descriptive alternative text ( A plate of delicious bobotie, a traditional South African dish ) to provide context for users who cannot see them. We ensure that the alt text is meaningful and accurately describes the image content. For example, instead of "image of food," we use "A close-up of spicy Durban curry with rice." Another example: A family enjoying a Sunday braai in their garden, laughing and eating grilled meats and vegetables . Another one is A detailed view of a vetkoek being fried in a large pan of oil at a street food market in Johannesburg .
  • Keyboard Navigation: Our website is fully navigable using a keyboard, allowing users who cannot use a mouse or other pointing device to access all content and functionality.
  • Color Contrast: We have carefully chosen color combinations to ensure sufficient contrast between text and background, making it easier for users with low vision to read our content.
  • Resizable Text: Users can easily increase or decrease the text size using their browser settings without losing any content or functionality.
  • Clear and Consistent Navigation: Our website has a clear and consistent navigation structure, making it easy for users to find what they are looking for.
  • Form Labels and Instructions: All form fields have clear labels and instructions to help users understand how to complete them.
  • ARIA Attributes: We use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes where necessary to provide additional information to assistive technologies, such as screen readers. For instance, ARIA roles and labels are implemented to clarify the purpose of interactive elements.
  • Video Captions: All videos on our website include accurate captions for users who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Responsive Design: Our website is designed to be responsive and adapts to different screen sizes and devices, ensuring a consistent user experience across all platforms.

We are continuously monitoring our website and implementing new accessibility features as needed. Our team is dedicated to keeping abreast of the latest accessibility guidelines and best practices.
